Most beautiful view of the Wörthersee at Pyramidenkogel | Carinthia, Southern Austria

The region around Wörthersee is certainly one of the most beautiful in Austria. From top of the Pyramidenkogel, you get a breathtaking view of it.

In spring, we took a drive up to Pyramidenkogel, a tower with a viewing platform on a mountain next to the Wörthersee. People seem to go there for the awesome view of the biggest lake in the area, the Wörthersee (Lake Wörth), but really, how lame is that? I, of course, was aiming for the 120 meters (394 feet) long curled slide, Free Fall and Flying fox down the tower. Unfortunately, my personal photographer was too scared of the Flying fox. She would just take me there after I promised her to take the slide only. Bummer!

Me looking at the Pyramidenkogel. Soon I’ll slide down Europe’s longest roofed slide. It’s 120 meters (394 feet) long!

The first time I drove to Pyramidenkogel was in the afternoon. It was crowded, which was annoying because I had to wait quite a bit before it was my turn at the slide. Therefore, this time, we decided to arrive in the morning as we heard that the place was not as busy yet. We were lucky, almost no people at all!

    Climb the Pyramidenkogel!

At first, we bought a ticket for the tower and the slide down and took the elevator to the viewing platform almost at the top of the tower. Of course you can also climb up the 441 steps, but who wants to do that? From there we took a few steps up even further. Even though it is at 64 meters (210 feet), I was not scared at all. At first, I thought it is 912 meters (almost half a mile) high. Gladly it is just above the sea level. That would have been too high to look down for me.

    Appreciate the gorgeous view

Okay, I came here for the slide, but I have to admit: the view is definitely outstanding with the lake, mountains and the cloudy weather. On the other side of the tower, you can even see as far as to Slovenia and Italy as the borders are actually close, which is also pretty cool.

After we appreciated the scenery, it was finally time to slide down. Wohooo!

The water from the Wörthersee looks so nice, I really want to go for a swim.

Mister Wong’s (probably not so secret) insider tips:

    • The later you go in the day, the more crowded it will be.
    • Only go when the weather is nice. Then the view will be much more beautiful.
    • Do not go there when it is snowing. You cannot see anything at all. (Speaking from experience, ha!)
    • If you do not have a car, you can take the bus up there or even hike.
    • You can find more infos on the Pyramidelkogel’s official website.

The city in the very back is Klagenfurt, capital of Austria’s most Southern state, Carinthia/Kärnten.
